How to block sites in Win XP?

Can anyone teach me how to block sites by using Hosts File in Win XP? I have WiMAX connection. The information about my net connect is the following:

Device Type : Canopy Lite - 5.7GHz - Subscriber Module - 0a-00-3e-fa-81-fc

Software Version : CANOPY 8.1.5 SM-DES

Software BOOT Version : CANOPYBOOT 1.0

Board Type : P10

FPGA Version : 111306

PLD Version : 9

Uptime : 06:28:09

System Time : 21:49:42 01/12/2001

Ethernet Interface : 100Base-TX Full Duplex

Antenna Polarization : Vertical

Please note that I have tried this way to block the sites. I went to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

There was a file "hosts", I right clicked on that and selected open or 'open with'. From that window, I selected Notepad. I then I just added the IP address I wanted to block, after saving when I checked it in EI, it was not blocked.

How to block sites in Win XP?
hey mate,

firstly i dont know if you are experienced with PCs but all i can say is unless you are very experienced NEVER alter your C//WINDOWS folder ...trust me bad things can happen ..

ok what you need to do is really quite simple:

google 'free website blocker' there will more than likely be some kind of software option there for you. once youve found some software that you like the sound of, download it and press 'RUN'. most of these programs will be able to block websites based on keywords, searchs, URL, and basically any other way you can think...

and best of all most of these prograsm will be less than 5 megabytes so it wont affect your PC harddrive size availaible..

hope this helps mate,,

peace
Reply:You Click the start button, then Control Panel, Then click Internet Options, Click on the Security Tab now you will see 4 icons one of those icons is red with a line in the middle called Restricted Sites Click on that once so that it is highlighted then click Sites now add the site(s) that you want to ban.
Reply:you can use third party software like NetDog : http://www.netdogsoft.com , it's easy,, just add website to "Always blocked website list" in NetDogAdmin.exe, none will be able to open it.
