Computer tech guys, here's a question:?

what would i need to "component" together a computer?

i know i need a motherboard, memory card (s), CPU, hard drive, disk drive, video card, and sound card. am i missing anything else?

let me explain: i'm asking b/c i have a dell dimension 8250 with 1/2 gig of RAM and i want to start recording music. now, i just replaced the disk drives and i have 2 perfectly-functional hard drives in there. the problem is, i wanted to upgrade my memory to at least 1.5 gigs, but the memory in the machine is RAM BUS memory and that's no longer available.

so, if i want a machine with more memory, i need to get a new comp....but i have good hard drives/disk drives - and i also have a sound card from an audio interface i got, so i'd rather buy the components. i'd like to just buy whatever i'm missing; and i wouldn't want any more Dell sh*t.

any suggestions?

Computer tech guys, here's a question:?
When friends ask me upgrade questions I tend to say if the upgrade costs more then 20% of the original cost of the machine, it is time to sell the old and build a new one.... This is what is going to happen in your case.... But the money invested in the hard drives can be kept since you can convert the to USB external drives....

Now recording music is CPU intensive.... Look for a Intel Core Duo or AMD X2 processor... Intel has the slight advantage right now but they tend to be more pricey.... As for RAM, you want at least 2GB since Microsoft Vista is on it's way... You don't need a high end video card unless you are also doing video editing... I would look at an ATI all in Wonder series just in case you decide to do video editing.....

The terms you need to watch out for are integrated devices... These save you money but you get what you pay for.... Someone suggested www.newegg.com... They are a great parts company and I agree with this sugestions...

Hope this helps...
Reply:neweggs.com, its like way cheap for computer parts
Reply:How much are you willing to spend?

Without knowing, I'd suggest an Intel Core 2 Duo (high performance processor), a SoundBlaster live card, GeForce 7800 gpu, and a motherboard with at least four DDR2 slots.
Reply:You can do it. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some drive problems can be easily fixed by yourself using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, and study your PC throughly and purchase the required items. Best of luck....!
