I literally had it defragging for about eight hours and it still didn't finish. Also, it has 19G hard drive but under disk space it says 2G out of 2G free. Does this mean the comp is almost full or that it need to be compressed (it is currently NOT compressed). Any help here is appreciated. The main symptoms are:
1) There is a bunch of junk that I don't know if I should delete (don't know what is necessary and what is not).
2) Constantly says "system resource are running low"
3) "Freezes" if I try to open anything besides my GUI/metadata p2p (Shareaza) while p2p is running
4) Error on my utorrent interface, "pieces" turns from blue lines to bright red
5) Generally slow when I'm on the internet, (which I assume is b/c I have dial-up?) and says "stack error at line:0" a lot on my homepage of my ISP.
Thank you so much in advance for any tips/help.
Computer won't defrag, pent III built for XP but OS is Win98 2nd ed....?
You said it slows down when on the net. This is an indication that your Cache has filled with unnecessary data. You should flush out your cache to make room more space when surfing. In addition, many processes and programs running in the background will eat your resources. Edit your startup configuration knock out some of the unnecessary programs.
Using a dial-up you need to free as much resources for net speed as possible. Plus P2P networks can add a lot of duplicate files that will slow you down. But if you want to free your system resources. You need to clean your registry. Scan your registry if you have a lot of errors. This means all those errors still are link to your registry. And each one of those registry keys require resources to stay alive your PC. Terminate them. Speed tips and How to stop freezes.
