Why isn't my ethernet port working? :*(?

I was trying to install a cable modem to my gateway desktop when I noticed my ethernet port wasn't working.

I know it's not the ethernet cable that was faulty b/c it works fine on my notebook computer. The port isn't disabled and it's not the drivers. Does this mean I need a new network interface card? Are they hard to install? Which one should I get?

Thanks so much for all the help everyone! %26lt;3

how do you know its not the drivers ? Also if you go into device manager do you see a network card or some device that is not installed, if it is installed, does it have an exclamation mark next to it ?

Also if you go into network connections is it disabled ?

does the network card have either a valid ip address if it is statically assigned, if it is statically assigned , should it be changed to use dhcp for both the ip address, subnet mask, default gateway and dns ?

Also if you go into control panel --%26gt; admin tools --%26gt; event viewer , can you see any errors relating to the network card ?
Reply:Turn off computer, UN plug cable modem from power, wait two minutes, pug it in start computer you should be connected to the Internet.
Reply:put a new one in an open slot, then connect to that.
Reply:I've had problems with those ports going bad... it happens.

If you decide to purchase a new network card, you'll probably spend $15-$25

They're not expensive at all. And it'd probably be a good idea to take your computer to Best Buy and let the GeekSquad install it, they're great at helping you get the best product :)
